Emerald Day in Fort McMurray
On October 2nd, the Alberta Emerald Foundation hosted over 350 public school students at MacDonald Island for the 2nd Annual Emerald Day in Fort McMurray. This event provided the students with the opportunity to learn about environmental opportunities and challenges in our region as well as hearing about inspiring environmental success stories from keynote speaker Simon Jackson, one of Time Magazine’s 50 Heroes for the Planet.
FMPSD Superintendent of Schools Doug Nicholls was on hand to bring greetings from the district, outlining the many green initiatives going on in our schools - from solar panels and a geodesic dome greenhouse to worm factories and waste free lunches! We were also very proud to see Westwood Community High School’s “Green Initiative” (a student led environmental group under the supervision of teacher Johnny Dulku) was invited to participate in the display portion of the event! Many thanks to all the local supporters including the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the Fort McMurray Environmental Committee and Newalta as well as Syncrude for their sponsorship!
