News Release: FMPSD Board Decides to Keep Greely Road Public School Open

(Fort McMurray, AB, April 26, 2018) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) Board of Trustees decided to keep Greely Road Public School open at its regular board meeting on April 25.

“We stand united as a Board after the decision. This is what’s best for our students. We will work together with the parents, school administration and staff to increase enrollment, and revitalize Greely Road,” noted Linda Mywaart, Board Chair, FMPSD.

Trustee Tim O’Hara recused himself from the discussion and the vote.

The process for consideration to close Greely Road, which has a current student enrollment of 85, was started in January as per Policy 15 - Closure School Facilities & Programs. Following public consultations, special meetings, and one on one parent meetings with Superintendent Doug Nicholls, the Board discussed the issue at length last night.

“With 85 students in the school, it was the right time to review the current status and the future of the school. The process was a thorough one which focused on programming for students and about creating opportunities for them. Several parents made it very clear to the Board that they appreciated their community school and the staff in it. While there are challenges with a small school population, we look forward to working with parents and staff as we plan for the future,” Superintendent Nicholls said.
