News Release: Early Learning Age of Entry Changes as per Alberta Education
(Fort McMurray, AB - November 1, 2018) The 2019-2020 school year will be a transition one for our Early Learning Childhood Development Program (ECDP) students. The new cut-off dates for ECDP will be December 31, 2018. This means children will need to be three years old on or before that date to attend ECDP in the 2019-2020 school year. These are children born in 2015. The eligibility age does not change for Kindergarten students, meaning children who are four years old on or before March 1, 2019 may begin Kindergarten in the 2019-2020 school year. Registration is currently open.
The changes are coming to align with the Alberta government’s amendment to the School Act, announced last November, which requires all students who enroll in Kindergarten to be five years old by December 31 of the school year. The Kindergarten age of entry change will not come into effect until 2020.
“This is our way of being proactive. We want FMPSD parents to be prepared, and ready for these new rules. Starting now will ensure a smooth transition for our future early learning students,” noted Shannon Noble, Assistant Superintendent, Inclusive Education, FMPSD.
Rhonda Blanchette, FMPSD’s Early Inclusive Education Coordinator explains more about the changes.
“Children will continue to have the opportunity to attend our ECDP and Kindergarten programs where they will develop and grow within play-based learning environments. This change will make our youngest learners three years, eight months old when they begin the school year, and they will meet the age requirements for the amendment to the School Act by the time they begin grade one in 2021.”
