FMPSD Ready for a Stellar New Academic Year
FMPSD Ready for a Stellar New Academic Year

The countdown is on. The Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) is ready to welcome students to an exciting new school year. First day of school for K-12 is Tuesday, September 3. ECDP (Early Childhood Development Program) starts on Monday, September 10.
MicroSociety is a new program at Timberlea Public School this year. Founded in the USA in the 1990s, MicroSociety is a thriving, modern-day, mini-metropolis, with students taking on real-world roles and responsibilities of government officials, business owners and managers, law enforcement, non-profit work, and participating in all aspects of a consumer marketplace.
Timberlea Public will be the first school in Fort McMurray to offer this unique educational experience. MicroSociety will be built into the school day for all Timberlea Public students, and no special registration is required. However, you have to be a registered student at the school to access the program.
École McTavish High School construction continues. The high school wing is looking good. Principal Scott Barr shares:
“It is extra exciting this year as we get ready to have students in our new classrooms and high school wing. It is all state-of-the-art and continues the feel of the school throughout. Students will be able to work in the new large learning commons, or read a book up in our second floor loft. There are also many more options available to the students as well: Gaming, Animation, Robotics, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and so much more! We look forward to sharing the new building with all students and families this year.”
The new Learning Commons at McTavish is looking great
Doug Nicholls, Superintendent, FMSPD is looking forward to the new academic year.
“This year will be bittersweet for me, as I retire from FMPSD in January 2020. But, I’m looking forward to an incredible start-up. Our students are in great hands with our staff, who are refreshed, and ready to launch a fantastic school year.”
