(Fort McMurray, AB - November 29, 2019) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) honoured Partners in Education at the fourth annual event. The celebration was held on November 28, 2019 at Shell Place, and saw community and business leaders in attendance.

The Board of Trustees Commitment to Excellence award went to Canadian Mental Health Association of Wood Buffalo (CMHA). From being a presence in our schools to providing grants and launching different programs, CMHA is an important part of the Division. The group has implemented the WITS anti-bullying program in all our elementary schools, created a Mental Health Curriculum Guide for high schools, initiated Kids in the Know Program in our junior high schools, provided us with the resources to have a Play Therapist in our schools, as well as provided support to implement Heart Math.

This year’s Large Business/Corporation Partner of the Year award went to the Bouchier Group for their $10,000 donation to the school lunch program at Frank Spragins High School. Medium Size Business Partner of the Year went to Sun Taxi for transporting our École McTavish High School Indigenous students for volunteer work free of charge; and Budget Blinds was named the Small Size Business Partner of the Year for helping create an outdoor garden at Christina Gordon Public School. Brad Karp, formerly of Country 93.3 radio station was named Promoter of the Year for championing FMPSD schools through social media.

FMPSD Board Chair, Linda Mywaart brought greetings on behalf of the Board, and specially acknowledged Superintendent Doug Nicholls, who is retiring in January 2020, as well as all the partners in attendance.

“Partners represent everything from family and individual donations of time and resources, to both large and small corporations and businesses. You are here on behalf of profit as well as social profit groups. All of you are valued and appreciated for your role in growing and supporting our students.”

“When you partner with us through financial donations, grant funding, gifts in kind, sharing of expertise and services, and mentoring (to name a few ways), you are investing not only in FMPSD, but in the community and the region we call home. Your generous partnerships open up numerous possibilities for young, inquisitive minds, for students eager to learn, explore, create and invent. Your support helps us to keep Doing What’s Best for Kids, and that, I believe, is what’s best for all of us!” Chair Mywaart enthused.

Congratulations and thank you everyone.
