News Release: Summer School 2020 Runs July 3 to 28 Online -  Registration Now Open

(Fort McMurray, AB, June 1, 2020) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) will be hosting Summer School from July 3 to 28 at École McTavish High School. All classes will be online; however, major assessments (tests, exams, essays) will take place at École McTavish. Register here

Diploma exams will be written from August 4 to 13 for all 30 level courses. Amid COVID-19 concerns, administrators have created writing schedules for each class following public health guidelines with different entrances/exits, rooms, and times.

In addition to high school students in Grades 10 through 12 - students exiting Grade 9 (June 2020) and entering Grade 10 in 2020-20201 are eligible to register for courses. Only one course can be taken due to the condensed nature of Summer School classes. Last year the program saw 380 students registered with a projection of over 400 this year.

Daniel Baseley will once again return as Summer School Principal. He is the current Vice Principal of Fort McMurray Christian School.

“We are delighted to be able to launch the summer program again this year, and continue our long-standing partnership with our sister school division. Although this year’s Summer School will look different from previous editions, the present circumstances add even greater importance to our classes. As such, we anticipate an even greater number of registrants taking advantage of this opportunity to work ahead or upgrade,” shares Baseley.

“A number of experienced summer school teachers will likely be returning, and I know their expertise will be greatly appreciated by everyone. July will be extremely busy, and it always seems to pass by in an instant. In August grade 12 students will write their Diploma examinations,” he continues.

David Hurley is looking forward to returning as Summer School Vice Principal. He is the current Vice Principal of Fort McMurray Islamic School.

“We are expecting another busy summer although it will be a different type of ‘busy' this year. We understand that we are in uncharted waters at the moment, but we are looking forward to working with our staff and students during these challenging times. We encourage all interested students to register, whether they are planning to upgrade or fast track, but we ask them to be aware of the condensed nature of this program,” notes Hurley.

“We hope to have a high number of students register again this year, but students must be highly motivated, disciplined and independent, especially with instruction being online this year. We look forward to welcoming new and returning students, and we want to assure everyone that our students’ safety and learning are of our utmost concern!” Hurley adds.

Online classes will run Monday through Friday beginning at 8 a.m., and ending at 1:30 p.m., with a 30 minute lunch break. However, as aforementioned, major assessments (tests, exams, essays) will take place at École McTavish.
