(Fort McMurray, AB - February 2, 2021) She’s the youngest and the first ever student to be inaugurated into the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s Women of Inspiration series - she is Shreeya Patel, our Westwood Community High School student! Shreeya who recently turned 18 was nominated by her family, and has been a well-known name across the Division for championing STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, Math) and computer science among girls.

At Westwood, she is one of the executive directors of Queens in Code, an all-girls group that promotes coding for female youth through interactive workshops. The group has expanded across the province, Ontario and Sasktachewan; and has even garnered interest from the United States. Shreeya is also the co-captain for both varsity volleyball and basketball at the school. In addition, she is the “General Assembly Leader for the Mayor's Advisory Council on Youth (MACOY). Through her work with MACOY she has successfully helped launch the first Youth and Health Conference after noticing a large discrepancy between men and women in the health sector. The event revolved around nutrition, mental health, and different occupations in the field,” as per the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta news release.

Shreeya, who is in grade 12 is delighted with the induction into the prestigious series.

"I am extremely honoured to be receiving the Women of Inspiration award and am earnestly grateful for the recognition, because it motivates me to continue pursuing my passions and embarking upon a journey of impact.”

“This honour would not have been possible without my community’s inspiration, and from those that I derive the strength to challenge myself and perform better at each stage. Receiving this award reaffirms the talent that exists in our Municipality’s youth, and I am ecstatic to be considered an inspiration for the youth of this region. It truly motivates me to continue filling my reservoir of confidence and I sincerely thank Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Bouchier for awarding me this achievement. Thank you!"

Cynthia Shelley, Principal, Westwood Community High School can’t say enough about Shreeya.

“I am thrilled to learn of Shreeya earning this honour because she fits the qualifications perfectly. She is an incredible role model for all students at Westwood, especially in non-traditional female arenas such as STEM and coding. Shreeya is a role model for her peers in sport, academics, STEM and is a leader in building school culture. Every week she arrives at school in full Westwood gear, promoting school spirit on “Westwood Wednesday.” In fact, because of her leadership and enthusiasm for her school community, Shreeya was also awarded Westwood's Trojan of the Month this past November. At Westwood, we promote community involvement, volunteerism and leadership - all practices that Shreeya has embraced. Congratulations Shreeya, you are very deserving of this honour.”

Jennifer Turner, Superintendent, Fort McMurray Public School Division congratulated Shreeya.

“What an amazing young lady! Shreeya has made us, her school, and her community proud. The future is bright for her; we know she will be doing remarkable things.”

Shreeya will be virtually inaugurated into the Women of Inspiration series on March 8 - International Women’s Day. Tickets are available through https://girlsincofnorthernalberta.org/
