FMPSD Statement on Pride Month

June 16, 2021

June is Pride month, and Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is a proud supporter. We are committed to providing every student a welcoming, caring, respectful, safe and inclusive school environment that fosters and maintains respectful responsible behaviours. Every member of our diverse school community has the right to live, learn and work in an environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment. And, if the words sound familiar to you, it’s because we have put this commitment into writing - it’s Board Policy 19. We are the first local school board to adopt an LGBTQ2S+ policy in 2015.

We have additional reasons to be proud: Our students and staff champion Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) in elementary, junior and senior high schools. We have a Division-wide Thrive committee with staff representatives from every school focusing on LGBTQ2S+ inclusion and support for students and staff.

Our Division works closely with the ATA Local 48 Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Committee (DEHR). Because students need to see themselves in literature, the local DEHR committee donated books to all school libraries, including books on gender diversity, pride, and diverse families. Our Division works closely with PrideYMM, a local initiative. Teachers are involved with PrideYMM, helping with awareness, training and creating safe spaces in schools, and helping out with the PrideYMM Canada Day float. The list can go on.

Inclusion is action, and we believe in leading with action. We are safe and caring, and a place of belonging.
