News Release: Westwood Student Receives $80,000 UBC Scholarship

(Fort McMurray, AB, June 17, 2021) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) congratulates Harsh Gandhi, our grade 12, Westwood Community High School student who has won the prestigious $80,000 International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES) from the University of British Columbia (UBC) earlier this month.

The International Major Entrance Scholarship is given to students with “exceptional academic achievement and intellectual promise, as well as impressive extracurricular and community involvement.”

Harsh, 17, will be attending UBC for Mechanical Engineering. An international student at Westwood, he came to Canada four years ago, and is looking forward to settling in the country.

“I plan to pursue Mechanical engineering with a Mechatronics (technology combining electronics and mechanical engineering) minor. In addition to academics, my main goal as an International student is to settle in Canada and connect with my parents here. I am also planning to pursue a Master’s in business after my engineering degree at UBC,” explained Harsh.

“This scholarship will be a great financial aid as the tuition for international students is higher. It will also allow me to focus on my studies rather than having to balance between my education and work,” he added.

Cynthia Shelley, Principal, Westwood Community High School is delighted for Harsh.

“Harsh works so incredibly hard for his achievements. An $80,000 scholarship is an amazing award to receive. He has a natural talent with technology, and he continues to step up as a leader in coding and Robotics to help all students, not just his own team. Harsh is the model of resiliency and has an incredible work ethic. We wish him all of the best at UBC in the faculty of Applied Science.”

Jennifer Turner, Superintendent, FMPSD congratulated Harsh.

“Harsh is a model student, who is diligent, focused, and disciplined. Being an International student comes with added responsibilities, and he knows how to multitask both academics, and extracurricular activities, making him the perfect candidate for this prestigious scholarship.”

Congratulations Harsh!
