CUPE Local 2545 Full Strike Activity in ALL FMPSD Schools Beginning Tuesday (January 7)

Posted on: General News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you that CUPE Local 2545 has provided notice that they will begin a full withdrawal of services (full strike) starting Tuesday, January 7, 2025. This strike action will impact all Fort McMurray Public Schools and will continue until further notice.

Starting Tuesday, January 7, 2025:

School Operations

  • Schools Remain Open.

  • Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP) classes are suspended until after the strike. This is because we will need ECDP teachers to act as Teachers on Call for Teacher absences while TAS staff is on strike. You will be reimbursed for your fees on a prorated basis after the strike ends.

  • Special Needs Students: Those students who have been asked to stay home previously will continue to do so.

  • Extracurricular Activities: School practices and before/after school clubs/activities may continue but MUST be done by 4:45 pm. Weekend tournaments may continue. Sports trips out of town may continue.

  • Busing Services continue with the usual routes and schedules.

Reminders and Communication

  • Normal Protocols: Please follow our usual communication protocols by contacting your child’s teacher for classroom-specific questions or concerns, and your school Principal for questions about school operations.

  • Joint Use: Joint-use facilities such as evening gym activities, will not be available during the strike.

We remain dedicated to negotiating an agreement that preserves and upholds the current essential educational supports and services for students and ensures that no reductions are necessary.
