FMPSD Dual-Credit and RAP Opportunities For Students

Posted on: General News

(Fort McMurray, AB - March 7th, 2023) Over 70 eager high school trades students from FMPSD visited MacIsland this past September for an enlightening experience at the Oil Sands Conference. They were able to explore different exhibitors, which offered lively demonstrations and informative presentations explicitly geared towards them. The students had a unique opportunity of conversing with experts in various trades; they asked insightful questions regarding post-secondary paths required and knowledge on any needed work experience, giving each student a better understanding of what it takes going forward.

High school students interested in skilled trades have a fantastic opportunity to launch their careers with the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). RAP not only equips participants with on-the-job training and experience but also provides them with academic preparation that can help them set up for success long after graduation. Exploring this program is an ideal way forward for those seeking out an occupational future related to skilled trade work. RAP allows students to enter into an approved apprenticeship while still in high school, earning both hours towards the apprenticeship and credits towards their diploma.

RAP comes with a great deal of personal and professional benefits. Students enrolled in the program gain real-world experience that can be difficult to come by at a young age. In addition, participants learn valuable job skills and receive mentorship from qualified professionals on-site before graduating high school. They also get the chance to establish essential industry relationships that can open doors throughout their career path.  Acceptance into this invaluable program requires commitment: weekly meetings, a semester of approved worksite training, and another semester devoted solely to core classes necessary towards achieving their diploma.

Since 2020, FMPSD and Keyano College have formed an effective alliance to provide dual-credit pathways in popular fields such as Early Childhood, Welding, Heavy Equipment Technician and Electrical Programs. In addition to the career counsellors at every public high school who offer guidance with post-secondary options and paths for students, RAP students benefit from additional off-campus coordinators that ensure successful navigation of Dual Credit programs alongside valuable work experience opportunities which prepare them for future challenges within the workplace setting. Credits earned through these programs count towards a student’s degree, meaning they can graduate from college sooner than if they had not participated in a dual credit program. In addition, because dual credit courses are often offered at a discounted rate, students can save money on tuition. Another benefit of dual credit programs is that they help students transition into post-secondary studies. These courses give high school students a taste of post-secondary-level work. They also help students develop the study habits and time management skills needed to be successful. Dual credit courses can also give students a competitive edge when applying to colleges and universities.

At FMPSD, we are committed to exposing our students at a young age to the diverse range of career paths available. To ensure that all learners have an opportunity for open exploration and development in this area, Division-wide career fairs will be held during spring months for grade nine onwards, as well as classroom careers fairs being implemented from division 1 schooling throughout division 2 classes with parents acting as guest speakers. Supported by collaborative work across schools and inter-school levels, our dedicated sessions explore roles within schools about different types of innovative career choices, so there's consistent exposure to career options starting right from kindergarten.
