(Fort McMurray, AB - March 4th, 2025) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) has carefully reviewed the 2025 Alberta Education Budget and appreciates the efforts to improve classroom conditions and address enrollment growth.
FMPSD welcomes Alberta Education's decision to shorten the Weighted Moving Average (WMA) calculation period from three years to two. This adjustment means that 70% of our funding will now be allocated based on actual enrollment for 2025-2026, compared to just 50% this year. This change represents a more accurate reflection of the Division's present needs and provides enhanced financial stability to address the demands of our growing community.
Additionally, the Division appreciates the targeted increases in several grant categories, such as the Classroom Complexity Grant’s 20% increase and adjustments to maintenance, technology, and learning support grants like Program Unit Funding (PUF), English as an Additional Language (EAL), and the School Nutrition Grant. These funds are critical to supporting the diverse and complex needs of our students and improving educational access.
However, FMPSD remains concerned about certain omissions within the budget. Despite the overall operating expense increase, the lack of adjustments to the basic per-pupil grants does not account for inflationary pressures affecting wages, benefits, utilities, supplies, and services. Furthermore, the removal of the Supplemental Growth Grant and reductions in funded student transportation for Grades K-6 pose significant challenges for meeting operational demands and delivering equitable services to our students.
Looking ahead, FMPSD is eager to review the forthcoming Funding Manual for School Authorities as well as the preliminary funding profile for 2025-2026 to fully understand the implications of Budget 2025 for the Division's programs and services.
