(Fort McMurray, AB - January 31st, 2025) On December 14th, 2024, the halls of the STEM Innovation Academy in Calgary buzzed with the hum of robots and the energy of competition. Among the 45 teams across Alberta, Westwood Robotics Teams 221X (Rocket) and 221S (Shanks) stood tall, showcasing ingenuity and teamwork that would make any community proud. Competing fiercely, they finished their run in the Semi-finals, narrowly losing to the eventual champions in a nail-biting battle. Both teams left with more than memories; they brought home prestigious awards celebrating their hard work, creativity, and professionalism.
Team 221S - Shanks earned the Design Award, recognizing their organized approach to engineering, stellar project management, and meticulous documentation. Their Engineering Notebook and interview showcased the power of a structured design process, setting an example for aspiring innovators.
Team 221X - Rocket took home the Judges Award, a special honour reserved for teams with standout qualities. Judges praised their determination, exceptional teamwork, and ability to communicate effectively during interviews, embodying the values of student-centred robotics.
Now, the spotlight turns to Westwood Community High School’s gym as it takes centre stage on February 1st, hosting the next VEX Robotics competition. With over 20 registered teams, including 15 incredible groups from FMPSD (Fort McMurray Public School Division), this event promises to be an arena of creativity and competition showcasing the best robotics talent in the region.
The excitement doesn’t stop here. After February 1st, another thrilling challenge awaits our teams at the Mecha Mayhem Signature Event in Calgary from February 7th-9th, an international stage with nearly 200 competing teams. And, as the grand finale for the season, FMPSD will proudly collaborate with FMCSD to host Provincials at the Keyano Sports and Wellness Centre on February 20th-21st.
To our Westwood Robotics teams, 221X and 221S, your hard work continues to inspire. To all the FMPSD teams heading into battle on February 1st and beyond, we’re cheering for you every step of the way. The robots are ready, the stage is set, and we can’t wait to see the sparks fly.
