(Fort McMurray, AB - March 17th, 2023) Timberlea Elementary School was lauded with distinction during the closing session of the 29th Annual MicroSociety Conference, as one of their students proudly accepted a George Award. Heidi Seguin has been honoured with the 2022 George Award for Leadership.
Named in honour of Dr. George H Richmond, founder of MicroSociety, for his pioneering work in youth development education across five countries and two-dozen states in the United States, these awards signify outstanding success by students, educators, and ever-supportive parents who have embraced the very best facets of a future-focused educational model espoused so earnestly by its esteemed namesake. As a political leader in her school's MicroSociety, Heidi excelled as Deputy Commissioner of the Police Force and adroitly contributed to parliament while serving as Deputy Minister of Finance. She demonstrated exemplary leadership capabilities by delivering valuable insight during Senate reviews on proposed legislation from members of parliament.
In a statement from MicroSociety commemorating the honour, Heidi was highlighted for her many roles within the school community and commitment to being a school leader.
"[Heidi] Seguin fulfilled her duties with thoughtfulness, integrity and humility. When dealing with disturbances, she conducted herself first with respect for others. And to ensure that she was treating people fairly, particularly on matters of greater sensitivity, she consulted with her supervisor and facilitator. Seguin was awarded the Physical Education Student of the Year, the Belinda Jamieson Social Justice Award, the Richard Thorne Respectful Student Award, and the Helping Hands Award as a classroom volunteer."
Principal Waleed Najmeddine of Timberlea Public School proudly celebrates their immense successes since introducing MicroSociety, an achievement that has undoubtedly been noticed.
"Heidi is a model student; we are very proud of her accomplishments over the years. We are honoured to receive a George Award for the second time in 2 years. This is only our 4th year as a MicroSociety school, so receiving international recognition is unexpected but inspiring."
Since 2019, Timberlea students have enjoyed a miniature version of their world; students are empowered to become the driving forces behind their self-sustaining school community. Actively engaging in roles such as government officials, business owners and managers, law enforcement personnel and non-profit workers; these student societies build a 'micro university' under the watchful guidance of teachers & community mentors that further integrates invaluable knowledge from leaders in all walks of life into everyday learning experiences.
Timberlea Public School is honoured to be one of four schools across Canada offering MicroSociety, recognizing its commitment to providing an unparalleled educational experience for students of Fort McMurray; Timberlea Public School continues strong with excellence and innovation at its core.
