Background
Schooling is a vital educational and social responsibility. It is important that all Division schools remain open and in operation on scheduled days if at all possible. We also understand that our students are better served – both academically and socially – by being in school. Nonetheless, our top priority is safety.
Procedures
- The Superintendent may close any school if the health or safety of students is endangered.
- The Principal may close a school in cases of serious emergency, such as a breakdown in service facilities resulting in intolerable classroom conditions.
- If such a closure is carried out, the Principal must report the action immediately to the Superintendent giving full details as to why the action was necessary.
- Proper precautions must be taken by the Principal to notify parents or guardians of the children affected.
